Description
Overview of the medicine
Secrin 3 mg Tablet contains Serotranil Hydrochloride, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used for the treatment of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose 3 mg once daily. May be increased to 6 mg after 2 weeks based on response. Maximum recommended dose 12 mg daily.
Elderly
Initial dose 3 mg once daily. Close monitoring recommended due to increased sensitivity and potential for adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment typically required for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min); consider lower starting dose.
How to Take
Take Secrin 3 mg Tablet orally once daily, with or without food. It is recommended to take it at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels.
Mechanism of Action
Serotranil Hydrochloride selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) by presynaptic neurons in the central nervous system, thereby increasing the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft. This leads to enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission, which is believed to be responsible for its antidepressant and anxiolytic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Initial effects typically within 1-2 weeks for mood, full antidepressant effect 4-6 weeks.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine (approximately 60%) and feces (approximately 35%) as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 20-24 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally; peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Serotranil Hydrochloride or any excipients.
- Concomitant use with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing MAOI therapy.
- Concomitant use with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue.
Drug Interactions
MAOIs
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome; contraindicated.
NSAIDs, Aspirin, Warfarin
Increased risk of bleeding due to potential antiplatelet effects.
Other serotonergic drugs (e.g., triptans, fentanyl, tramadol, St. John's wort)
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, tremor, agitation, and serotonin syndrome. Treatment involves supportive care, maintaining airway, monitoring cardiac rhythm, and managing symptoms. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether Serotranil Hydrochloride is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
