Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefuroxime axetil is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
This specific 125 mg pediatric drop formulation is not intended for adult use. Adults typically use higher strength tablets.
Elderly
This specific 125 mg pediatric drop formulation is not intended for elderly use. Elderly patients typically use higher strength tablets with consideration for renal function.
Pediatric
For infants and children aged 3 months to 12 years: 10 mg/kg twice daily for most infections (maximum 250 mg daily). For otitis media or more severe infections: 15 mg/kg twice daily (maximum 500 mg daily). The reconstituted suspension should be accurately measured using the provided dropper or oral syringe. (e.g., 2.5 mL of 125 mg/5 mL suspension equals 62.5 mg, 5 mL equals 125 mg).
Renal_impairment
In pediatric patients with renal impairment, dosage should be reduced based on creatinine clearance. Consult detailed prescribing information for specific adjustments (e.g., dose interval prolongation for severe impairment).
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Shake the bottle well before each use. Measure the exact dose using the provided measuring device.
Mechanism of Action
It works by interfering with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is relatively quick after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine.
Half life
Approximately 1.2 to 1.6 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, absorption is enhanced when taken with food.
Metabolism
Hydrolyzed to the active compound cefuroxime in the intestinal mucosa and blood; not extensively metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime axetil or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agents (e.g., penicillins, monobactams and carbapenems).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant administration with probenecid increases the area under the serum concentration-time curve by 50%.
Oral Anticoagulants
Cefuroxime axetil may potentiate the anticoagulant effect of oral anticoagulants.
Antacids/H2 Blockers/PPIs
Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may reduce the bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil. Take cefuroxime at least one hour before or two hours after antacids.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze. Discard unused portion after the specified period.
Overdose
Overdose of cephalosporins can cause cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered if ingestion is recent. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are effective in removing cefuroxime.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus. It is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy, but should be used only if clearly needed. Lactation: Cefuroxime is excreted in human milk in small concentrations. Use with caution in nursing mothers.
