Overview of the medicine
Sizodon contains risperidone, a second-generation antipsychotic primarily used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar mania, and irritability associated with autistic disorder.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Schizophrenia: Initial 2 mg/day, target 4-6 mg/day; Bipolar mania: Initial 2 mg/day, target 2-6 mg/day.
Elderly
Lower initial doses and slower titration recommended (e.g., 0.5 mg twice daily).
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required; start with 0.5 mg twice daily and titrate cautiously.
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Risperidone blocks dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, leading to its antipsychotic effects. It also has antagonistic activity at alpha1-adrenergic and histamine H1 receptors.

Excretion
Excreted primarily via urine (70%) and feces (14%).
Half life
Risperidone: approximately 3 hours; active metabolite (9-hydroxyrisperidone): approximately 21 hours.

Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP2D6 to its active metabolite 9-hydroxyrisperidone.

Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Carbamazepine
Decreases risperidone levels.
CNS depressants
May have additive CNS depressant effects.
Fluoxetine/Paroxetine
Increases risperidone levels.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include sedation, tachycardia, hypotension, and extrapyramidal symptoms. Treatment is supportive, focusing on maintaining airways, oxygenation, and cardiovascular function.
