Description
Overview of the medicine
SK-Cef 250 mg Capsule contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and is effective against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 200 mg to 400 mg once daily or 200 mg twice daily. For SK-Cef 250 mg Capsule, typically 250 mg once daily or 250 mg twice daily, as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment needed based solely on age, but renal function should be assessed, and dosage adjusted accordingly if renal impairment exists.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min: 75% of the standard dose. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min: 50% of the standard dose.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally with a glass of water, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. It is important to complete the full course of treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime, a beta-lactam antibiotic, exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains essential for cell wall strength and integrity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved 2-6 hours after administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (about 50%) and bile (about 10%) over 24 hours. Renal excretion is the main route.
Half life
Plasma half-life is typically 3-4 hours, potentially prolonged in renal impairment.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed; food may delay absorption but does not significantly affect the extent.
Metabolism
Cefixime is not extensively metabolized in the body; about 10% may be metabolized by deacetylation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of serious hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma levels by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant use may increase carbamazepine plasma concentrations.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May increase prothrombin time (INR) and risk of bleeding; close monitoring is advised.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment is largely symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts into breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
