Description
Overview of the medicine
Sonexa 0.5% Eye Ointment contains Moxifloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic, indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis and other superficial ocular infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin ribbon (approximately 1 cm) into the conjunctival sac three times a day for 7 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands before and after application. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid, apply a thin ribbon of ointment inside the eyelid. Close eye gently. Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement often seen within 2-5 days.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged, a small amount may be eliminated via urine and feces after systemic absorption.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical ocular use; systemic half-life is approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical ocular administration. High concentrations achieved in tear film and ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized after topical application.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or other quinolones, or to any component of the ointment.
Drug Interactions
Other topical ophthalmic medications
If using multiple eye drops/ointments, administer them at least 5 minutes apart to prevent wash-out.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Due to the small capacity of the conjunctival sac, overdose is unlikely. If symptoms of irritation occur, rinse the eye with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman as it is unknown if moxifloxacin is excreted in human milk after topical ocular administration.
