Description
Overview of the medicine
Supotaria 50 mcg is a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist (LABA) indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One 50 mcg inhalation capsule twice daily (morning and evening).
Elderly
No dosage adjustment typically required, but monitor for side effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate impairment.
How to Take
For oral inhalation only, using a dry powder inhaler device. Do not swallow the capsule. Ensure proper inhaler technique as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Mechanism of Action
Supotaria works by stimulating beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscles, leading to relaxation of these muscles and bronchodilation. This helps to open the airways and improve breathing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-3 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly via urine and feces.
Half life
Approximately 8-12 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral inhalation.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic via direct glucuronidation and O-demethylation (CYP2D6, CYP2C19).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance (Formoterol Fumarate) or to any of the excipients.
- Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma or COPD where intensive measures are required.
Drug Interactions
Beta-blockers
May reduce the effect of Supotaria and cause severe bronchospasm.
QTc prolonging drugs
Increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias.
MAOIs/Tricyclic antidepressants
May potentiate the effect on the cardiovascular system; use with extreme caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include tremor, palpitations, tachycardia, headache, dizziness, nausea, and hyperglycemia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including cardiovascular monitoring.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution advised during lactation as it is unknown if Supotaria is excreted in human milk.

YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials demonstrated efficacy and safety in patients with asthma and COPD, showing improved lung function (e.g., FEV1) and reduced exacerbations. Long-term studies have further confirmed its role in chronic respiratory management.
Lab Monitoring
- Monitor potassium levels periodically, especially in patients at risk of hypokalemia.
- Monitor lung function (e.g., FEV1) to assess efficacy.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize proper inhaler technique to ensure optimal drug delivery and patient compliance.
- Ensure patients understand it is a maintenance therapy, not a rescue medication for acute bronchospasm.
- Assess for cardiovascular comorbidities (e.g., arrhythmia, hypertension) before prescribing and monitor during therapy.
- Always prescribe with an inhaled corticosteroid for asthma patients.
Patient Guidelines
- Read the patient information leaflet carefully before use and understand how to use the inhaler device.
- Ensure proper inhaler technique to maximize drug delivery and prevent oral thrush if used with corticosteroids.
- Do not stop using Supotaria abruptly without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better.
- Supotaria is a maintenance medicine, not for acute relief of breathing problems.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
