Cefotaxime is a broad-spectrum third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 g IV or IM every 8-12 hours, depending on the severity of infection.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but dosage adjustment may be needed for renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is required for severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Administered intravenously (IV) as a slow infusion or intramuscularly (IM) deep into a large muscle.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).

Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys (renal route).

Storage
Store below 30°C, protect from light and moisture. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately.
Overdose
Symptomatic and supportive treatment. Hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution during lactation.
