Description
Overview of the medicine
Timozin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including urinary tract, respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg once daily for 7-14 days depending on the type and severity of infection. For severe infections, 750 mg once daily may be considered.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is needed for elderly patients unless they have severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
In moderate to severe renal impairment (Creatinine Clearance < 30 mL/min), the dose should be reduced (e.g., 250 mg once daily) or the dosing interval extended.
How to Take
Take Timozin orally with or without food. Do not take with antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, or with iron or zinc supplements. Allow at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking such products.
Mechanism of Action
Timoxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
1-2 hours (therapeutic effect)
Excretion
The drug is primarily excreted renally (60-70%) as unchanged drug, with some biliary excretion.
Half life
3-5 hours
Absorption
Timozin is well absorbed orally, with a bioavailability of approximately 70-80%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Timozin undergoes limited hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Timoxacin or any other fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
- •History of tendonitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone use.
- •Children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
- •Patients with myasthenia gravis (may exacerbate symptoms).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of INR is recommended.
Theophylline
Increased plasma concentrations of theophylline, leading to increased risk of toxicity. Monitor theophylline levels.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture.
Antacids (Magnesium/Aluminum), Sucralfate, Iron/Zinc supplements
Reduced absorption of Timozin when taken concomitantly. Separate administration by at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Gastric lavage may be considered. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing Timozin from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Timozin should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in breast milk and should be avoided during lactation due to potential adverse effects on the infant's joints.
