Description
Overview of the medicine
Velox 125 mg Pediatric Drop is an antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin group. It is primarily used to treat various bacterial infections in children, including infections of the respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue, and urinary tract. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not applicable for pediatric drop form; adults usually take capsules/tablets.
Elderly
Not applicable for pediatric drop form.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required. For pediatric patients with creatinine clearance <10 mL/min, the dose should be reduced.
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably with food to reduce gastrointestinal upset. Use the provided dropper for accurate dosing. Shake well before use. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Cefalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This disrupts the peptidoglycan layer, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations usually occur within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Excreted rapidly by the kidneys, primarily by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. About 80% or more of the dose is excreted unchanged in the urine within 8-12 hours.
Half life
Approximately 0.5 to 1.2 hours in adults with normal renal function; longer in neonates and individuals with renal impairment.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, even in the presence of food, though peak concentrations may be delayed.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cefalexin or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin (e.g., anaphylaxis).
Drug Interactions
Metformin
Cefalexin may increase metformin levels, requiring dose adjustment.
Probenecid
Probenecid may increase cefalexin levels and prolong its action.
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May increase INR and bleeding risk, monitor closely.
Nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., Aminoglycosides)
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after 7-14 days (check specific manufacturer instructions).
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and hematuria. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Treatment is primarily supportive and symptomatic. Hemodialysis may be useful in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cefalexin is generally considered safe during pregnancy (Category B). It is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution is advised, but generally considered compatible with breastfeeding.
