Overview of the medicine
Velox 250 mg Capsule contains Cefuroxime Axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. For most infections, 250 mg twice daily is sufficient.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; dose adjustment may be required for severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be reduced in patients with significant renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
Should be taken orally after food for optimal absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime Axetil inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Onset
Typically within 1 hour.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the urine via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.2 to 1.5 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and rapidly hydrolyzed to cefuroxime in the intestinal mucosa and blood.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the liver; hydrolyzed to the active drug cefuroxime.
Side Effects
Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases cefuroxime levels.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives (advise additional contraception).
Antacids/H2 blockers
May reduce bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Management is supportive; hemodialysis may be beneficial in cases of severe renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Can be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
