Description
Overview of the medicine
Brodil 100 mcg Inhaler is a short-acting beta-2 agonist (SABA) inhaler used for quick relief of asthma and COPD symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For symptomatic relief, 1 or 2 inhalations (100 or 200 mcg) as needed. For prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm, 2 inhalations (200 mcg) 10-15 minutes before exercise. Maximum recommended dose is 8 actuations in 24 hours.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment, but use with caution due to potential for increased sensitivity and co-morbidities.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for inhaled salbutamol, as systemic exposure is limited.
How to Take
For inhalation only. Shake the inhaler well before each use. Exhale fully, then place the mouthpiece in your mouth. Begin to inhale slowly and deeply through your mouth while pressing down on the canister once. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then exhale slowly. Wait at least 1 minute before taking another puff if prescribed. Rinse mouth with water after use to prevent oral thrush and reduce systemic absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscles of the bronchi, leading to relaxation of the bronchial muscles and widening of the airways. This action helps to relieve bronchospasm and improve breathing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
5-15 minutes
Excretion
Mainly via urine, both as unchanged drug (approximately 69-90%) and its metabolite.
Half life
4-6 hours (systemic half-life after inhalation)
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the lungs into the systemic circulation; some absorption from the gastrointestinal tract if swallowed. Peak plasma concentrations occur 2-3 hours after oral administration, but much faster after inhalation.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, metabolised to an inactive sulfate conjugate (4'-O-sulfate of salbutamol).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the inhaler.
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May enhance the risk of hypokalemia.
Beta-blockers (non-cardioselective)
May antagonize the bronchodilator effect of salbutamol and cause severe bronchospasm.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
Enhanced risk of cardiovascular side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from frost and direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep away from heat sources. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremors, headache, hypokalemia, restlessness, and metabolic acidosis. Management involves supportive care and discontinuation of the drug. Cardioselective beta-blockers may be considered in severe cases, but with extreme caution due to risk of bronchospasm.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus (Category C). Salbutamol is likely secreted in breast milk; use with caution in lactating mothers.

Salbutamol has undergone extensive clinical trials since its development, establishing its efficacy and safety as a short-acting bronchodilator. Ongoing research may focus on new delivery systems or comparative effectiveness.
Lab Monitoring
- Potassium levels should be monitored in patients receiving high doses, as hypokalemia can occur.
Doctor Notes
- Educate patients on proper inhaler technique and the difference between rescue and maintenance inhalers.
- Monitor for signs of overuse, which may indicate uncontrolled asthma.
- Review concomitant medications for potential interactions, especially beta-blockers.
Patient Guidelines
- Use this inhaler only as directed by your doctor.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Learn proper inhaler technique to ensure effective delivery of the medicine.
- Rinse your mouth with water after each use to prevent oral thrush and reduce systemic absorption.
- If your symptoms worsen or you need to use your inhaler more often, consult your doctor immediately.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Continue your regular dosing schedule.
