Description
Overview of the medicine
Brodil 2 mg Syrup contains Salbutamol, a fast-acting bronchodilator used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
2-4 mg (1-2 teaspoonfuls) 3-4 times daily.
Elderly
Starting dose may be lower, e.g., 2 mg (1 teaspoonful) 3-4 times daily, adjusted according to response.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for mild to moderate renal impairment; use with caution in severe cases.
How to Take
Administer orally. Can be taken with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the bronchial tree, leading to bronchodilation. It also inhibits the release of mast cell mediators from the lungs.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Bronchodilation typically occurs within 5-15 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites and unchanged drug.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to inactive conjugates (e.g., salbutamol 4'-O-sulfate).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Salbutamol or any component of the syrup
- Concurrent use with non-selective beta-blockers
- Severe heart conditions (use with extreme caution)
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
Potentially severe hypokalemia with concomitant use, especially with high doses.
Beta-blockers
Non-selective beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol) may antagonize the effect of Salbutamol and can cause severe bronchospasm.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) & Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
Increased risk of cardiovascular effects; use with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include tachycardia, tremors, headache, hyperglycemia, and hypokalemia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including discontinuing the drug and monitoring potassium levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is secreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
