Description
Overview of the medicine
Ciprofloxacin 0.3% eye drop is an ophthalmic antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Bacterial Conjunctivitis: 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) 4 times daily for 5-7 days. For severe infections, 1-2 drops every 2 hours while awake for 2 days, then 1-2 drops every 4 hours while awake for 5 days. Corneal Ulcers: 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours, then 2 drops every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. On day 2, 2 drops every hour. On days 3-14, 2 drops every 4 hours. Treatment may continue beyond 14 days if needed.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment necessary.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for ophthalmic use.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch, instill the prescribed number of drops, and close the eye gently. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of antibacterial action within the eye.
Excretion
Minimal systemic excretion of unchanged drug. Locally, it is cleared by tear turnover.
Half life
Not clinically significant systemically due to minimal absorption. Ocular tissue concentrations are maintained for several hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after ocular administration. Primarily acts locally.
Metabolism
Minimal ocular metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics.
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Other topical ophthalmic medications
If more than one topical ophthalmic medication is being used, they should be administered at least 5-10 minutes apart.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
An ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. Flush the eye with lukewarm water if an overdose occurs.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether ciprofloxacin is excreted in human milk after ophthalmic use; however, due to minimal systemic absorption, adverse effects on breastfed infants are unlikely.
