Description
Overview of the medicine
Ciprozid 0.3% Eye Drop is an antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial eye infections. It belongs to a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones, which work by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is effective against a wide range of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Bacterial Conjunctivitis: 1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake for 2 days, then 1-2 drops every 4 hours while awake for the next 5 days. Corneal Ulcers: 2 drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours, then 2 drops every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. On the second day, 2 drops hourly. On days 3-14, 2 drops every 4 hours. Treatment may continue beyond 14 days if epithelization has not occurred.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to create a pouch. Instill the prescribed number of drops into the pouch. Close eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination. If using other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours of administration, clinical improvement often seen within 2-3 days.
Excretion
Mainly through kidneys (systemically); locally, cleared with tears and blinking.
Half life
Not relevant for ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption; systemic half-life is 3-5 hours.
Absorption
Systemic absorption from ophthalmic administration is minimal. Most of the drug remains localized in the ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism in ocular tissues; systemically, primarily hepatic.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Other topical ophthalmic medications
If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is being used, they should be administered at least 5 minutes apart.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Protect from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
An overdose of ophthalmic ciprofloxacin is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal systemic absorption. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic treatment may be required. Local irritation may occur with excessive topical application.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit outweighs potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted in human milk after systemic administration, but systemic absorption from ophthalmic administration is minimal. Use with caution in nursing mothers.
