Description
Overview of the medicine
Ciprozid 250 mg Tablet contains Ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-750 mg orally twice daily, depending on the type and severity of infection. For most UTIs, 250 mg twice daily for 3-7 days.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
CrCl 30-60 mL/min: 250-500 mg every 12 hours. CrCl <30 mL/min: 250-500 mg every 18-24 hours.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Avoid taking with dairy products, calcium-fortified juices, or antacids containing magnesium/aluminum.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Mainly via renal excretion (50-70% as unchanged drug) and some through fecal route.
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; absolute bioavailability is approximately 70%.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver (15-30%) to less active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
- Concomitant administration with tizanidine
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring INR monitoring.
Tizanidine
Concomitant use is contraindicated due to increased tizanidine plasma concentrations, potentially leading to hypotension and sedation.
Theophylline
Increased plasma concentrations of theophylline, leading to increased risk of toxicity.
Antacids/Mineral supplements (containing Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, Zn)
Reduce absorption of ciprofloxacin. Administer ciprofloxacin 2 hours before or 6 hours after these agents.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include renal toxicity. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may be helpful.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted into breast milk; consider discontinuing nursing or the drug.
