Description
Overview of the medicine
Emixef 100 mg Suspension is an antibiotic from the cephalosporin group, used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in suspension form; refer to tablet dosage. If used: 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours.
Children
8 mg/kg/day, given as a single daily dose or in two divided doses every 12 hours. For 100 mg/5 mL suspension: 0.8 mL/kg/day.
Renal_impairment
Creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min: 75% of standard dose. Creatinine clearance <20 mL/min: 50% of standard dose.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Can be taken with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime is a bactericidal antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine, with some biliary excretion.
Half life
Average half-life is 3-4 hours, but can be prolonged in renal impairment.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Food can delay absorption but does not significantly affect the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized. A small portion may undergo metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporins
- History of severe allergic reactions to penicillin
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma concentrations by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels have been reported with concomitant cefixime use.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May increase prothrombin time (INR). Close monitoring of INR is recommended.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discarded after the recommended period.
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
