Description
Overview of the medicine
Emixef Pediatric Drop contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in pediatric drop formulation. Refer to other Cefixime formulations for adult dosage (e.g., 200-400 mg daily).
Elderly
Not typically used for elderly in pediatric drop formulation. Refer to other Cefixime formulations for elderly dosage with caution for renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required for severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min). Consult physician.
How to Take
Administer orally. The dose should be measured accurately using the dropper provided. Can be taken with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial lysis and death. It has a high affinity for penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are enzymes involved in the final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Excreted primarily by the kidneys (approximately 50% unchanged in urine), and some biliary excretion.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food does not significantly alter absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefixime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity).
Drug Interactions
Nefopam
Potential for increased nephrotoxicity when co-administered with other nephrotoxic drugs. Use with caution.
Carbamazepine
May increase carbamazepine levels when co-administered. Monitor carbamazepine levels.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (PT) and INR, increasing risk of bleeding. Close monitoring is recommended.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature (20-25°C), protect from light and moisture. Reconstituted solution should be stored in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discarded after specified period.
Overdose
In case of overdose, supportive and symptomatic treatment is recommended. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis do not remove Cefixime from the body in significant amounts.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefixime is generally considered safe during pregnancy, but use only if clearly needed. Excreted in small amounts in breast milk; use with caution during lactation.
