Description
Overview of the medicine
Eusef 1 gm Injection contains Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1.5 gm IV/IM every 8 hours for severe infections, or 750 mg IV/IM every 8 hours for less severe infections. For surgical prophylaxis, 1.5 gm IV at induction.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required based solely on age, but renal function should be monitored.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required based on creatinine clearance (e.g., CrCl 10-20 mL/min: 750 mg every 12 hours; CrCl <10 mL/min: 750 mg every 24 hours).
How to Take
Intravenous (IV) or Intramuscular (IM) injection. Reconstitute the powder with sterile water for injection.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within 15-30 minutes for IV, 30-60 minutes for IM.
Excretion
Primarily via the kidneys by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after intramuscular administration, good bioavailability.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; mainly excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or other cephalosporins
- History of severe hypersensitivity to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins, carbapenems)
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases cefuroxime levels by reducing renal excretion.
Aminoglycosides
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral anticoagulants
May increase anticoagulant effect (e.g., warfarin).
Storage
Store dry powder below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Reconstituted solution storage depends on manufacturer instructions.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include convulsions and other neurological effects. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis may be effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed, Category B. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor infant for potential side effects (e.g., diarrhea, candidiasis).
