Description
Overview of the medicine
Eusef 500 mg Capsule contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and skin.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose for Cefixime is 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours. For Eusef 500 mg capsule, the dosage should be strictly as prescribed by a physician, potentially 500 mg once daily for severe infections.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required in elderly patients with normal renal function. For patients with impaired renal function, dosage adjustment is necessary.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min, the dose should be reduced to 300 mg daily. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min, the dose should be reduced to 200 mg daily. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis patients require 200 mg daily.
How to Take
Eusef 500 mg capsule should be taken orally, with or without food. It is generally recommended to take it at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels in the body.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. It has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 2-6 hours after administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (about 50%) and bile.
Half life
Plasma elimination half-life is typically 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, even in the presence of food.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; about 50% of the absorbed dose is excreted unchanged in urine.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases peak plasma concentrations and AUC of cefixime by delaying renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant use may increase carbamazepine plasma concentrations.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (PT) and INR, enhancing the anticoagulant effect. Close monitoring is advised.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Supportive therapy should be provided.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
