Description
Overview of the medicine
Eusef 125 mg Pediatric Drop is a broad-spectrum third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
This pediatric drop formulation is not intended for adult use. Adult dosage of Cefixime is typically 400 mg once daily.
Elderly
This pediatric drop formulation is not intended for elderly use. Dosage for elderly patients requiring Cefixime should use appropriate adult formulations, with renal adjustment if necessary.
Renal_impairment
For children with Creatinine Clearance (CrCl) < 30 mL/min, the dose should be reduced. Consult a physician for specific adjustments.
How to Take
Administer orally using the provided dropper, directly into the mouth or mixed with a small amount of liquid. Shake well before use. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
1-2 hours
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine (about 50%) and bile/feces (about 10%).
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly affect the extent.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporins
- History of anaphylactic reaction to penicillin
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases Cefixime plasma concentrations.
Carbamazepine
Increased Carbamazepine levels reported with co-administration.
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May increase prothrombin time; monitor INR.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discarded after 7 or 14 days (check specific product leaflet).
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. No specific antidote. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis does not effectively remove Cefixime.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cefixime is generally considered safe in pregnancy (Category B). Use during lactation should be done with caution, as small amounts may be excreted in breast milk. Consult a physician.
