Description
Overview of the medicine
Jasocaine 2% Injection is an amide-type local anesthetic used to produce local or regional anesthesia for surgical, diagnostic, and obstetrical procedures.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Individualized based on procedure, site, depth of anesthesia, vascularity, and patient condition. Max single dose typically 4.5 mg/kg (without epinephrine) or 7 mg/kg (with epinephrine), not exceeding 300 mg.
Elderly
Reduced doses recommended due to decreased hepatic metabolism and renal function. Monitor closely.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment for mild to moderate impairment, but caution advised. Severe impairment may require dose reduction due to metabolite accumulation.
How to Take
Administered by trained healthcare professionals via infiltration, nerve block, epidural, or spinal injection. Do not inject intravenously unless specifically indicated for resuscitation (e.g., ventricular arrhythmias).
Mechanism of Action
Jasocaine stabilizes the neuronal membrane by inhibiting the ionic fluxes required for the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby producing local anesthetic action. It primarily blocks voltage-gated sodium channels.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
2-5 minutes (infiltration), 5-15 minutes (epidural).
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys as metabolites and less than 10% as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 1.5-2 hours (in adults).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from injection sites, extent depends on vascularity of site.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by microsomal enzymes (oxidative N-dealkylation and hydrolysis).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to jasocaine or other amide-type local anesthetics
- Severe heart block
- Complete atrioventricular block
- Hypovolemic shock (for regional anesthesia)
Drug Interactions
Cimetidine
Inhibits hepatic metabolism, increasing jasocaine levels.
Beta-blockers
May reduce hepatic blood flow, leading to decreased metabolism and increased systemic levels of jasocaine.
Neuromuscular blockers
May potentiate the action of neuromuscular blockers.
Antiarrhythmics (Class I)
Additive cardiac depressant effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include CNS effects (dizziness, tinnitus, seizures, respiratory depression) and cardiovascular effects (hypotension, bradycardia, arrhythmias, cardiac arrest). Management involves maintaining airway, ventilation, treating seizures (benzodiazepines), supporting cardiovascular function (vasopressors), and lipid emulsion therapy for severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during pregnancy; local anesthetics cross the placental barrier. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts, generally considered compatible with breastfeeding with caution.

Lab Monitoring
- Monitoring of vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation) during and after administration. Serum drug levels if toxicity suspected.
Doctor Notes
- Always have resuscitative equipment and drugs readily available when administering local anesthetics.
- Aspirate prior to injection to avoid intravascular administration.
- Use the lowest effective dose.
Patient Guidelines
- Inform your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions and medications.
- Report any unusual or severe side effects immediately.
- Remain still during the injection procedure.
- Avoid sudden movements after the procedure until full sensation returns.
Missed Dose Advice
Not applicable as this is an injection administered by a healthcare professional for a specific procedure.
Driving Precautions
Do not drive or operate machinery until the effects of the local anesthetic have completely worn off and normal sensation and motor function have returned.
Lifestyle Advice
- Follow post-procedure instructions carefully.
- Avoid activities requiring full motor control until anesthesia wears off.
