Description
Overview of the medicine
Kilmax 125 mg Tablet contains Amoxicillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The typical adult dose for mild to moderate infections is 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours. For Kilmax 125 mg, it may be prescribed for specific conditions or as a pediatric dose.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is usually required for elderly patients with normal renal function. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary. For severe impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min), consider reducing the dose or extending the dosing interval (e.g., 125 mg to 250 mg every 12-24 hours depending on severity).
How to Take
Kilmax 125 mg Tablet should be taken orally with water. It can be taken with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to bacterial lysis and death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner bacterial cell membrane, which are involved in the final stages of peptidoglycan synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes to 1 hour (antibacterial effect).
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by active tubular secretion and glomerular filtration. Renal excretion accounts for 60-70% of the dose within 6 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; about 10-25% is metabolized to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to another beta-lactam agent (e.g., cephalosporin, carbapenem).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May prolong prothrombin time; monitor INR closely.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of rash, particularly in patients with hyperuricemia.
Methotrexate
May decrease renal clearance of methotrexate, increasing its toxicity.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise additional contraception.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and fluid-electrolyte imbalance. In rare cases, renal failure and convulsions may occur. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage and hemodialysis if severe.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe during pregnancy, but use only if clearly needed. Amoxicillin is excreted in breast milk; generally considered safe during lactation, but monitor infants for diarrhea, candidiasis, or skin rash.
