Description
Overview of the medicine
Kilmax 750 mg Injection is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
750 mg every 12-24 hours, administered intravenously or intramuscularly, depending on the severity of the infection. Duration of treatment depends on the infection type and patient response.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required for elderly patients unless there is significant renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min. Consult physician for specific guidelines.
How to Take
Kilmax 750 mg Injection should be administered slowly intravenously (over 3-5 minutes) or deeply intramuscularly. It should be reconstituted with sterile water for injection as per manufacturer's instructions. Do not mix with other medications in the same syringe.
Mechanism of Action
Kilmax, containing Cefixime, is a third-generation cephalosporin that exerts its bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes after IV administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys, predominantly unchanged in urine.
Half life
Approximately 2-4 hours, though can vary based on renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after intramuscular injection; intravenous administration provides immediate systemic availability. Bioavailability is high.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins, penicillins, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any beta-lactam antibiotic.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring INR monitoring.
Probenecid
May increase and prolong the plasma concentration of Kilmax by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may aid in the removal of the drug, especially in patients with impaired renal function.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown a risk, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in low concentrations in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
