Description
Overview of the medicine
Lifcin-125 mg oral solution contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, especially in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in this formulation; adult dosage forms (e.g., 200mg/400mg tablets) are usually prescribed. For children (6 months to 12 years): 8 mg/kg/day given as a single daily dose or in two divided doses.
Elderly
Caution is advised, especially with renal impairment. Consult a physician for specific dosage.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance < 60 mL/min. For severe impairment, dosage should be reduced.
How to Take
Orally, with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved 2-6 hours after administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via the kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion), with some biliary excretion.
Half life
Plasma half-life is typically 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% absorbed orally. Food may delay absorption but does not significantly affect the total amount absorbed.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver, but a significant portion is excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Cefixime, other cephalosporins, or penicillins.
- History of anaphylaxis to penicillin.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase Cefixime plasma concentrations by inhibiting renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant use may increase carbamazepine plasma concentrations.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase the anticoagulant effect, requiring careful monitoring of prothrombin time.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep the reconstituted solution refrigerated (2-8°C) and do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Supportive therapy, including fluid and electrolyte management, is recommended. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, use in pregnant women only if clearly needed. Use with caution in nursing mothers; small amounts may pass into breast milk.

Lab Monitoring
- Renal function tests (e.g., serum creatinine, BUN) especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or on prolonged therapy.
- Complete blood count (CBC) if therapy is prolonged.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the critical importance of completing the full prescribed course of antibiotics, even if symptoms improve, to minimize the development of antibiotic resistance.
- Educate parents/caregivers on proper reconstitution and accurate measurement of the oral solution for pediatric patients.
- Advise monitoring for signs of hypersensitivity reactions or C. difficile-associated diarrhea.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the entire course of medication as prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve, to prevent antibiotic resistance.
- Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure even distribution of the medicine.
- Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing; do not use household spoons.
- Store the reconstituted solution in the refrigerator and discard any unused portion after the recommended period (usually 7-14 days).
