Description
Overview of the medicine
Lifcin 750 mg tablet contains Ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dosage varies by infection severity and type. For severe or complicated infections, 500-750 mg orally twice daily. For uncomplicated UTIs, 250-500 mg orally twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required based on age alone, but renal function should be considered.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be adjusted based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 30-60 mL/min, 250-500 mg every 12 hours. For CrCl <30 mL/min, 250-500 mg every 18-24 hours.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with or without food. Do not take with dairy products (milk, yogurt) or calcium-fortified juices alone. Avoid taking with antacids, iron, or zinc preparations within 2 hours before or 6 hours after.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys (40-50%), with some excretion via the fecal route.
Half life
Plasma elimination half-life is approximately 3-5 hours.
Absorption
Rapid and well-absorbed orally, with bioavailability of approximately 70%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Metabolized to a limited extent (10-15%) in the liver. Four active metabolites are formed.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
- Concomitant administration with tizanidine due to increased risk of adverse effects.
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
May increase CNS stimulation and risk of seizures.
Warfarin
May enhance anticoagulant effect, increasing bleeding risk.
Tizanidine
Contraindicated, leads to increased tizanidine levels and hypotension.
Cyclosporine
May increase cyclosporine nephrotoxicity.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate plasma concentrations.
Theophylline
Increases theophylline serum levels, leading to toxicity.
Antacids, sucralfate, iron/zinc supplements
Reduce ciprofloxacin absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, initiate gastric lavage, provide supportive care, and maintain adequate hydration. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing ciprofloxacin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Ciprofloxacin may cause arthropathy in immature animals.
