Description
Overview of the medicine
Lifcin-15 Eye Drop is an antibiotic ophthalmic solution containing Ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone. It is used to treat various bacterial infections of the eye.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For bacterial conjunctivitis: 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 hours for 5-7 days. For severe infections like corneal ulcers: 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours, then 2 drops every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day, then 2 drops every hour on day 2, and then 2 drops every 4 hours for the subsequent days, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch, and instill the prescribed number of drops. Close eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone, inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes to hours for symptomatic relief and bacterial load reduction.
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion for the small amount systemically absorbed.
Half life
Ocular half-life not precisely defined due to minimal systemic absorption; systemic half-life is approximately 3-5 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs after topical ophthalmic administration. Peak concentrations are achieved in the ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism; primary metabolism is hepatic.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones, or to any component of the formulation.
- Viral or fungal infections of the eye (unless co-existing bacterial infection is treated).
Drug Interactions
None significant for ophthalmic use.
Systemic drug interactions are unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. However, if multiple ophthalmic medications are used, administer them at least 5 minutes apart.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
An acute overdose is unlikely with ophthalmic application. If swallowed, supportive measures should be taken.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor.
