Metronidazole is an antibiotic and anti-protozoal medication used to treat a wide variety of infections, including parasitic infections and bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 200-400 mg three times daily, duration varies by infection.
Elderly
Dose adjustments may be considered based on renal/hepatic function.

No dose adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment; for severe impairment, dose reduction may be considered.
How to Take
Take orally with or after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole enters the bacterial or protozoal cell, is reduced by redox proteins to form reactive nitro-radicals, which then damage DNA and other macromolecules, leading to cell death.

Storage

Overdose

Category B in pregnancy (avoid in 1st trimester if possible). Excreted in breast milk, use with caution or consider temporary cessation of breastfeeding.
