Description
Overview of the medicine
Sefurox 750 mg injection contains Cefuroxime sodium, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and for surgical prophylaxis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dose is 750 mg IM/IV every 8 hours. For severe infections, 1.5 g IV every 8 hours. Surgical prophylaxis: 1.5 g IV 30-60 minutes before surgery.
Elderly
Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage intervals or reduced doses may be required. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min, 750 mg once daily.
How to Take
For intramuscular (IM) administration, dissolve powder in sterile water for injection and inject deep into a large muscle. For intravenous (IV) administration, reconstitute with sterile water for injection and administer slowly over 3-5 minutes or as an infusion over 30-60 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to the disruption of peptidoglycan synthesis, resulting in cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, within minutes for IV, 30-60 minutes for IM.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys, through glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.2 to 1.6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after intramuscular (IM) administration; peak plasma concentrations reached in 30-60 minutes. Intravenous (IV) administration provides immediate systemic availability.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the body; excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, any other cephalosporin antibiotic, or any excipients.
- History of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylactic reaction) to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins, monobactams, carbapenems).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases cefuroxime levels by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Oral anticoagulants
May increase anticoagulant effect.
Aminoglycosides and potent diuretics (e.g., furosemide)
May increase risk of nephrotoxicity.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or stored as per manufacturer's guidelines for a limited time.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Treatment is largely symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can reduce cefuroxime levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cefuroxime crosses the placenta and is excreted in breast milk in small amounts. Use during pregnancy and lactation should be done with caution and only if clearly needed, after consulting a doctor.
