Description
Overview of the medicine
Turbocef 250 mg Tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, otitis media, and Lyme disease.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250 mg twice daily for most infections. For more severe infections, 500 mg twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required unless there is significant renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl < 20 mL/min, 250 mg once daily is recommended.
How to Take
Turbocef 250 mg Tablet should be taken orally with food to enhance absorption. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew, or break it.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime Axetil acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the bacterial cell wall, thereby interfering with the transpeptidation reaction and preventing the formation of peptidoglycan, which is essential for bacterial cell wall integrity. This leads to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour (peak plasma concentrations).
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
Absorption
Cefuroxime axetil is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and rapidly hydrolyzed to cefuroxime. Absorption is enhanced with food.
Metabolism
Cefuroxime is not extensively metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, any other cephalosporin antibiotics, or to any of the excipients.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant use with probenecid increases cefuroxime plasma concentrations and prolongs its half-life by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Oral Anticoagulants
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and other oral anticoagulants, increasing the risk of bleeding.
Antacids/H2 Blockers/Proton Pump Inhibitors
May decrease the bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil, especially if taken shortly after food.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose of cephalosporins can cause cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Management includes supportive care, monitoring renal function, and hemodialysis if necessary to remove the drug.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus. Limited human data suggest no increased risk of major birth defects. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefuroxime is excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.

Lab Monitoring
- Periodic monitoring of renal function is advisable during prolonged or high-dose therapy.
- Monitoring of prothrombin time/INR for patients on oral anticoagulants.
Doctor Notes
- Counsel patients on the importance of completing the full course of therapy to prevent resistance.
- Be aware of potential drug interactions, especially with anticoagulants and gastric acid suppressants.
- Advise patients to take with food to optimize absorption and reduce GI side effects.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the entire course of medication as prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve.
- Take the tablet with food to reduce stomach upset and enhance absorption.
- Do not save this medication for future infections; use only for the current prescribed illness.
