Description
Overview of the medicine
Turbocef 750 mg Injection contains Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 750 mg - 1.5 g every 8 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection. For uncomplicated gonorrhea, a single dose of 1.5 g.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required unless there is severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage interval should be extended or dose reduced based on creatinine clearance (e.g., CrCl 10-20 mL/min: 750 mg every 12 hours; CrCl <10 mL/min: 750 mg every 24 hours).
How to Take
For intravenous (IV) administration, reconstitute with sterile water for injection and inject slowly over 3-5 minutes or infuse over 30 minutes. For intramuscular (IM) administration, reconstitute with sterile water for injection and inject deeply into a large muscle.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to lysis and death of bacterial cells.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes after IV administration; within 30-60 minutes after IM administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after intramuscular (IM) injection. Intravenous (IV) administration provides immediate systemic availability.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the body. Exists as the active drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins, or to any of the excipients.
- History of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylactic reaction) to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins, carbapenems).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Competitively inhibits renal tubular secretion, resulting in higher and prolonged plasma concentrations of cefuroxime.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Loop Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
May increase the risk of nephrotoxicity with high doses of cephalosporins.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect and increase bleeding risk. INR monitoring is recommended.
Storage
Store intact vials below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or stored as per manufacturer's instructions.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include convulsions, encephalopathy, and other neurological effects. Treatment is primarily symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis can reduce cefuroxime levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus. Use in pregnancy should only be considered if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk. Cefuroxime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.

Doctor Notes
- Ensure patient history of beta-lactam hypersensitivity is thoroughly assessed before administration.
- Adjust dosage in patients with significant renal impairment.
- Monitor for signs of superinfection or C. difficile-associated diarrhea, especially with prolonged use.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if you feel better.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor.
- Do not share this medication with others.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
Cefuroxime can cause dizziness. Patients should be advised to exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until they are certain that cefuroxime does not adversely affect their ability to perform such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
