Montelukast is a medication used for the management of asthma and allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking leukotrienes, substances in the body that cause inflammation and tightening of airways.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults at 4 mg strength; adults usually take 10 mg.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed based on age.

4 mg once daily in the evening.
How to Take
Take orally once daily in the evening, with or without food. For chewable tablets, chew completely before swallowing.
Mechanism of Action
Montelukast selectively antagonizes the cysteinyl leukotriene 1 (CysLT1) receptor. This blocks the action of leukotrienes, which are potent inflammatory mediators involved in asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces via bile.

Approximately 2.7 to 5.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in 2-4 hours.

Extensively metabolized in the liver by CYP2C8, CYP3A4, and CYP2C9.
