Description
Overview of the medicine
Windel 5 mg Respirator Solution contains Salbutamol, a rapid-acting selective beta-2 adrenoceptor agonist used for the relief of bronchospasm in conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other reversible obstructive airway diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initially 0.5 mL (2.5 mg) diluted to 2.0-2.5 mL with normal saline, to be inhaled using a nebulizer. May increase to 1.0 mL (5 mg) if needed. Doses can be repeated 3-4 times daily or as required.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution with cardiovascular comorbidities.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required, but monitor for side effects.
How to Take
Administer via nebulizer. The solution must be diluted with normal saline to the recommended volume before nebulization. Do not swallow.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the muscle and bronchodilation. This action helps to open the airways, making breathing easier.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
5-15 minutes after inhalation
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine, partially as metabolite and partially as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours (systemic half-life)
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral inhalation; systemic absorption from the lung and gut. Peak plasma concentrations reached within 0.5-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation
- •Thyrotoxicosis (relative contraindication)
- •Severe cardiac disease (relative contraindication)
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May decrease digoxin levels.
Diuretics
Increased risk of hypokalemia.
Beta-blockers
May antagonize the effects of salbutamol, leading to severe bronchospasm.
MAOIs/Tricyclic Antidepressants
Increased risk of cardiovascular adverse effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremors, headache, hyperglycemia, and hypokalemia. Treatment is generally supportive and symptomatic. Consider cardioselective beta-blockers with caution.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution during lactation.
