Description
Overview of the medicine
Ciprofloxacin 0.3% Eye Drop is an antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal ulcers. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For bacterial conjunctivitis: 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 hours for 5-7 days. For severe infections/corneal ulcers: 2 drops every 15 minutes for 6 hours, then 2 drops every 30 minutes for 18 hours, then 2 drops every hour for 6 hours, then 2 drops every 4 hours for remaining treatment duration.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for ophthalmic use.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid to create a pouch, and instill the prescribed number of drops into the conjunctival sac. Close your eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to the disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action locally, with bacterial eradication beginning within hours.
Excretion
Primarily local action; any minimally absorbed drug is renally excreted.
Half life
Systemic half-life is not clinically significant for ophthalmic use due to minimal absorption; local duration of action is related to dosing frequency.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs following ophthalmic administration, leading to high local concentrations in ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism due to negligible absorption.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other quinolone antibiotics
- Hypersensitivity to any excipients in the formulation
Drug Interactions
Systemic interactions
Systemic drug interactions are unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption from ophthalmic administration. However, if multiple eye drops are used, administer them at least 5 minutes apart.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity. In case of accidental ingestion or excessive topical application, flush eyes with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted in human milk after oral administration; however, systemic exposure from ophthalmic drops is minimal, and risk to a breastfed infant is considered low. Consult a doctor.
