Description
Overview of the medicine
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. This suspension form is particularly suitable for children and adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250-750 mg twice daily, depending on the infection. Consult a physician for exact dosage.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with impaired renal function. Consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage is required based on creatinine clearance. Consult a physician for specific guidelines.
How to Take
Administer orally, usually twice daily. Shake well before use. Can be taken with or without food, but avoid dairy products or calcium-fortified juices within 2 hours of administration.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally (approximately 50-70% as unchanged drug and active metabolites), with some non-renal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours in adults.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 70-80%.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to four active metabolites; however, the parent drug accounts for the majority of the systemic exposure.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones.
- Concomitant administration with tizanidine.
- History of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with quinolone use.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Potentiation of anticoagulant effect, increased bleeding risk. Monitor INR closely.
Tizanidine
Contraindicated due to significant increase in tizanidine levels, leading to hypotension and sedation.
Theophylline
Increased serum concentrations of theophylline, leading to toxicity.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of tendinitis/tendon rupture.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
Reduced absorption of ciprofloxacin. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C, away from direct light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be performed. Provide symptomatic and supportive treatment. Maintain adequate hydration.
