Furocef 125 mg Tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil, which is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 250 mg to 500 mg twice daily depending on the infection. For 125 mg, typically used in specific infections or as part of a pediatric regimen.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment needed unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <20 mL/min).
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal upset. Complete the full course of treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime Axetil works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Peak plasma concentrations reached approximately 2-3 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the urine via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.2 to 1.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and hydrolyzed to cefuroxime. Absorption is enhanced with food.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity to any type of beta-lactam antibacterial agents (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases cefuroxime levels by reducing renal clearance.
Oral anticoagulants
May enhance anticoagulant effect; monitor INR.
Antacids/H2 blockers/Proton pump inhibitors
May reduce bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil; administer at least 2 hours before or after.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include convulsions, neurological sequelae. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis may be used to remove cefuroxime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe during pregnancy. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but caution is advised.
