Description
Overview of the medicine
Furocef 250 mg Injection contains Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by preventing the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: Typically 750 mg IM/IV every 8 hours. For severe infections, 1.5 g IM/IV every 8 hours. The 250 mg injection is often used for specific lower dose indications or as part of a larger total dose.
Elderly
Elderly: Dosage similar to adults, but adjust for renal function if impaired.
Renal_impairment
Renal impairment: Reduce dosage frequency or amount based on creatinine clearance (e.g., CrCl 10-20 mL/min: 750 mg once daily; CrCl <10 mL/min: 750 mg every 48 hours).
How to Take
For intramuscular (IM) injection, reconstitute with sterile water for injection and administer deep into a large muscle. For intravenous (IV) injection, reconstitute with sterile water and administer slowly over 3-5 minutes or infuse over 30-60 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This leads to osmotic instability and lysis of the bacterial cell.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within minutes for IV, and 30-60 minutes for IM.
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after intramuscular administration. Intravenous administration provides immediate systemic availability.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or other cephalosporins
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agents (e.g., penicillins, carbapenems)
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases cefuroxime plasma concentrations and prolongs its half-life by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Aminoglycosides
May increase risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance anticoagulant effect; monitor INR.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Do not freeze. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or stored as per manufacturer's guidelines (usually stable for 24 hours at 2-8°C).
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include convulsions, encephalopathy. Management involves supportive care and hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
