Description
Overview of the medicine
Furocef 750 mg Injection contains Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical adult dosage is 750 mg intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV) every 8 hours. Dosage may vary depending on the severity and type of infection.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but renal function should be assessed and dose adjusted accordingly if impaired.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary based on creatinine clearance. For severe impairment, dosage intervals may need to be extended or doses reduced.
How to Take
Furocef 750 mg Injection is administered by a healthcare professional, either deep intramuscularly (IM) or slowly intravenously (IV) over 3-5 minutes, or by intravenous infusion over 30-60 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset, typically within minutes after IV administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after intramuscular (IM) injection. Intravenous (IV) administration provides immediate and complete systemic availability.
Metabolism
Cefuroxime is not significantly metabolized in the body; it is excreted largely unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins, carbapenems).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Probenecid delays the renal excretion of cefuroxime, leading to increased and prolonged plasma concentrations.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent administration with aminoglycosides may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Potent Diuretics
Concurrent use with potent diuretics (e.g., furosemide) may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral Anticoagulants
Cefuroxime may enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and other oral anticoagulants.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted solutions have specific storage conditions and expiry times.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include convulsions, encephalopathy, and other neurological sequelae. Management is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis can effectively remove cefuroxime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cefuroxime is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy (FDA Pregnancy Category B). It is excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution in nursing mothers, but generally considered compatible with breastfeeding.
