Description
Overview of the medicine
Furocef 1.5 gm Injection contains Cefuroxime Sodium, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
750 mg - 1.5 gm every 8 hours, depending on severity of infection. For severe infections, 1.5 gm IV every 6-8 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally needed unless severe renal impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 10-20 mL/min, 750 mg every 12 hours. For CrCl <10 mL/min, 750 mg every 24 hours.
How to Take
Furocef 1.5 gm Injection is administered either intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV). For IM, reconstitute with sterile water for injection and inject deeply into a large muscle. For IV, reconstitute and administer slowly over 3-5 minutes or infuse over 30-60 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, thereby interfering with the transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within 15-30 minutes for IV.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after intramuscular injection. Peak plasma concentrations achieved within 30-60 minutes. Bioavailability is high.
Metabolism
Cefuroxime is not significantly metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillins)
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases cefuroxime plasma concentrations and prolongs its half-life by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral anticoagulants
May increase the anticoagulant effect, requiring closer monitoring of INR.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Reconstituted solutions should be used immediately or stored as per manufacturer's guidelines (e.g., 24 hours at 2-8°C).
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include convulsions, encephalopathy, and other neurological sequelae. Management is primarily supportive; hemodialysis may be useful in removing cefuroxime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category B. Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution in nursing mothers.
