Description
Overview of the medicine
Leflox-TS 0.15% Eye Drop is an antibiotic medicine containing Levofloxacin, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers. It works by stopping the growth of the causative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Instill 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake, up to 8 times a day for the first 2 days, then 1-2 drops every 4 hours while awake, up to 4 times a day for the next 5 days. Corneal Ulcers: Consult physician for specific regimen, typically more frequent initial dosing.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for ophthalmic use.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and instill the prescribed number of drops into the conjunctival sac. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Levofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action at the site of infection, typically within minutes to hours.
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion for any systemically absorbed drug.
Half life
Systemic half-life is approximately 6-8 hours, but ocular kinetics are different with sustained levels in tear film.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs after ocular administration, resulting in very low plasma concentrations.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged if systemically absorbed.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the formulation.
- Viral or fungal eye infections.
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic medications
If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications. Ophthalmic ointments should be administered last.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity. If excess solution is instilled, it may be flushed from the eye with lukewarm water. If accidentally ingested, seek medical advice.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor.
