Description
Overview of the medicine
Sefur 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic from the cephalosporin class, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and otitis media.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dosage varies by infection. Typically 250 mg to 500 mg twice daily. For suspension, dosage is usually weight-based for children.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <20 mL/min).
How to Take
For oral use. Administer with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are generally achieved within 2-3 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged in the urine, primarily via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Approximately 50% of an administered dose is excreted within 12 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration of cefuroxime axetil. Absorption is enhanced with food.
Metabolism
Cefuroxime axetil is rapidly hydrolyzed by esterases in the intestinal mucosa and blood to release cefuroxime into the circulation. It is not significantly metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant administration of probenecid increases cefuroxime AUC (area under the curve) and prolongs its half-life.
Oral anticoagulants
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect. Close monitoring of INR is recommended.
Antacids/H2-receptor antagonists
May reduce the bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil. It is recommended to take cefuroxime axetil at least one hour before or two hours after antacids/H2-receptor antagonists.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep reconstituted suspension refrigerated (2-8°C) and discard after 7-10 days.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include convulsions, encephalopathy, and other neurological effects. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis can be used to reduce serum cefuroxime levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefuroxime has been widely used in pregnant women without adverse effects. Small amounts are excreted in breast milk, generally considered compatible with breastfeeding. Consult a doctor.
