Description
Overview of the medicine
Sefur 750 mg Injection contains Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
750 mg intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM) every 8 hours. For severe infections, 1.5 g IV every 8 hours.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage must be reduced based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 10-20 mL/min, 750 mg every 12 hours. For CrCl <10 mL/min, 750 mg every 24 hours.
How to Take
For IV administration, dilute the powder with sterile water for injection and administer slowly over 3-5 minutes or as an infusion over 30 minutes. For IM administration, reconstitute with sterile water for injection and inject deep into a large muscle.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting the peptidoglycan layer formation in the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within 15-30 minutes for therapeutic levels.
Excretion
Primarily via the kidneys by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after intramuscular (IM) injection. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 30-60 minutes.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant use increases cefuroxime plasma concentrations and prolongs its half-life by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Oral anticoagulants
May enhance the anticoagulant effect.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives (though controversial, caution advised).
Aminoglycosides/Loop diuretics
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or stored for a short period as advised.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include convulsions, encephalopathy. Management is supportive, and hemodialysis may be effective in removing cefuroxime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.

- Liver function tests (LFTs) if abnormalities are suspected.
- Complete blood count (CBC) for prolonged therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Cefuroxime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic.
- Crucial to confirm bacterial infection before initiating treatment.
- Monitor renal function in elderly and renally impaired patients.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of antibiotics, even if symptoms improve.
- Report any signs of allergic reactions immediately.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
