Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic effective against a wide range of bacterial infections in children, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections. It works by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not applicable for this pediatric formulation. For adults, typical dosage is 250-500 mg every 6 hours.
Elderly
Not applicable for this pediatric formulation. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in elderly patients with reduced renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be reduced in patients with significant renal impairment. Consult a physician for specific guidelines based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
For oral administration. Shake the suspension well before each use. Can be taken with or without food; however, taking it with food may help reduce gastrointestinal upset. Use the provided measuring dropper or spoon for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefalexin is a bactericidal antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located in the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved approximately 1 hour after oral administration.
Excretion
Approximately 80% of the dose is excreted unchanged in the urine within 6 hours by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Plasma half-life is typically 0.5 to 1.2 hours in individuals with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially when taken on an empty stomach. Food may delay absorption but does not significantly affect the total absorbed amount.
Metabolism
Cefalexin is not significantly metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefalexin or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Close INR monitoring is advised.
Metformin
Cefalexin may increase metformin plasma concentrations, potentially leading to increased risk of lactic acidosis. Monitor blood glucose and adjust metformin dose if necessary.
Probenecid
Co-administration with probenecid may increase and prolong plasma concentrations of cefalexin by inhibiting its renal tubular secretion.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discarded after 14 days.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, and hematuria. Management should be symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered. Hemodialysis may be useful in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Cefalexin is generally considered safe during pregnancy (FDA Pregnancy Category B). However, it should be used only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. Lactation: Cefalexin is excreted in small amounts in breast milk. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor.
