Description
Overview of the medicine
Abdolax 5 mg Oral Solution is a stimulant laxative used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. It works by increasing bowel movement.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 10 years: 5 mg orally once daily before bedtime. May increase to 10 mg if needed, but do not exceed 10 mg daily.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but may require lower doses to avoid excessive laxative effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required; use with caution.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably at bedtime, with a glass of water. Avoid taking with milk or antacids within one hour of administration.
Mechanism of Action
Bisacodyl acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate sensory nerve endings, which increases peristaltic contractions of the colon. It also increases water and electrolyte secretion into the colon, leading to a softer stool consistency and easier defecation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral solution: 6-12 hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via feces as the active metabolite and its glucuronides; a small amount is excreted renally.
Half life
Not well-defined due to minimal systemic absorption and local action, but the active metabolite desacetyl-bisacodyl has a half-life of about 16 hours.
Absorption
Minimally absorbed systemically when taken orally; primarily acts locally in the colon. Metabolized in the liver to its active form, desacetyl-bisacodyl.
Metabolism
Hydrolyzed by esterases in the small intestine and by colonic bacteria to the active metabolite, bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM), then conjugated in the liver to glucuronides.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Acute abdominal pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Intestinal obstruction
- Appendicitis
- Severe dehydration
- Undiagnosed rectal bleeding
Drug Interactions
Diuretics, corticosteroids
Increased risk of electrolyte imbalance (especially hypokalemia) with prolonged use.
Antacids, milk, proton pump inhibitors
May dissolve the enteric coating prematurely, leading to gastric irritation and dyspepsia. Administer at least 1 hour apart.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and significant fluid and electrolyte loss (especially potassium). Management involves supportive care, correction of fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for short-term use during pregnancy and lactation, as systemic absorption is minimal. Consult a doctor before use.
