Description
Overview of the medicine
Avlotrin 200 mg Suspension contains Albendazole, a broad-spectrum anthelmintic used to treat various types of parasitic worm infections in the gut and other tissues.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical intestinal worm infections: 400 mg (20 mL suspension) as a single dose. For Strongyloidiasis or Taeniasis: 400 mg once daily for 3 days. Doses vary significantly for tissue infections (e.g., neurocysticercosis, echinococcosis) requiring prolonged treatment.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, but caution is advised in those with hepatic or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
No significant dosage adjustment is usually required as renal excretion of the active metabolite is minimal. However, caution is advised.
Hepatic_impairment
Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment, as albendazole is extensively metabolized in the liver. Liver function tests should be monitored.
How to Take
Administer orally. For best absorption, it should be taken with food, especially a fatty meal.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole selectively binds to beta-tubulin, inhibiting tubulin polymerization, which leads to disruption of the parasite's metabolism and ultimately its death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is variable, depending on the type and location of the helminthic infection.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the bile as metabolites; a small amount is excreted in the urine.
Half life
Parent drug: short; Active metabolite (Albendazole sulfoxide): approximately 8-12 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Absorption is significantly increased when taken with a fatty meal.
Metabolism
Rapidly and extensively metabolized in the liver to the active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide, and then to inactive sulfone metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to albendazole or any component of the formulation.
- Pregnancy, especially during the first trimester (due to potential embryotoxicity/teratogenicity).
Drug Interactions
Cimetidine
Increases plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide.
Praziquantel
Increases plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide.
Theophylline
Albendazole may decrease theophylline clearance; monitor theophylline levels.
Dexamethasone
Increases plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C/D (depending on exposure). Avoid in the first trimester. Use only if potential benefit outweighs risk. Caution should be exercised when administering to nursing mothers as it is unknown if albendazole or its metabolites are excreted in human milk.
