Description
Overview of the medicine
Betadine 1% w/v Mouthwash is a broad-spectrum antiseptic solution used for oral hygiene. It helps treat and prevent infections of the mouth and throat, and is useful before, during, and after dental or oral surgical procedures.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Gargle or rinse with 10-15 ml (undiluted) for 30 seconds, up to 4 times a day. Do not swallow.
Elderly
Same as adults.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and only after consulting a healthcare professional, especially with prolonged or extensive use.
How to Take
For oral rinsing or gargling only. Pour the recommended amount into the measuring cup, rinse thoroughly for 30 seconds, and then spit out. Do not swallow.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine releases free iodine, which rapidly penetrates microbial cells, oxidizes proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids, leading to rapid cell death. It exhibits broad-spectrum microbicidal activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within 30 seconds of application.
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion of absorbed iodine.
Half life
Systemic half-life of absorbed iodine is typically 1-2 days, but very little is absorbed from topical oral application.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption from intact oral mucosa. Significant absorption may occur from large or damaged areas, or with prolonged use.
Metabolism
Absorbed free iodine is metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone or any other component of the formulation.
- Patients with thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, thyroid adenoma, goiter) due to potential for iodine absorption.
- Not recommended for children under 6 years of age.
- Before and after radioiodine therapy.
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Concomitant use of povidone-iodine with lithium may result in a synergistic hypothyroid effect.
Enzymatic wound cleaners
Povidone-iodine can reduce the effectiveness of enzymatic wound cleaners.
Hydrogen peroxide, silver sulfadiazine, taurolidine
Concurrent use with other antiseptic agents may reduce efficacy of both substances or cause skin irritation.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion may cause gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. In rare cases, systemic iodine toxicity (e.g., metabolic acidosis, renal impairment, hypernatremia) can occur, requiring supportive treatment including gastric lavage and electrolyte management.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution and only if clearly needed. Consult a doctor or pharmacist. Potential for iodine absorption, which may affect fetal or infant thyroid function. Avoid prolonged or extensive use.
