Description
Overview of the medicine
Betadine 5% w/w Powder is an antiseptic powder containing Povidone-iodine used for the treatment and prevention of infection in minor wounds, cuts, and abrasions, and for general skin antisepsis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount of powder directly to the affected area one to three times daily. May be covered with a sterile dressing.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required. Use as for adults.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to potential for iodine absorption, especially with prolonged or extensive use.
How to Take
For external use only. Clean the affected area, then sprinkle a thin layer of powder. Do not inhale. Wash hands before and after application.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine releases free iodine, which has a broad spectrum of microbicidal activity against bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and spores. It acts by oxidizing vital cellular components and interfering with protein and nucleic acid structure.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate upon application
Excretion
Excreted mainly via the kidneys, with some elimination through feces.
Half life
Not applicable for topical use, as systemic absorption is minimal.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Increased absorption may occur from large wound surfaces or mucous membranes.
Metabolism
Absorbed iodine is metabolized in the liver, primarily deiodination.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to povidone-iodine, iodine, or any excipients
- Patients with thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism) due to potential for iodine absorption
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women, especially prolonged or extensive use (consult doctor)
- Neonates and infants, especially premature infants, due to risk of iodine-induced hypothyroidism
- Before and after radio-iodine scintigraphy or treatment of thyroid carcinoma
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Concurrent use may increase the hypothyroid effect
Enzymatic wound cleansers
Povidone-iodine may inactivate enzymes
Other topical antiseptics
Concurrent use may alter efficacy or cause skin irritation
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep container tightly closed.
Overdose
Systemic overdose from topical application is rare due to minimal absorption. In case of accidental ingestion or extensive application on large wounds, symptoms may include gastrointestinal irritation, metabolic acidosis, and renal impairment. Symptomatic and supportive treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution and only if clearly needed. Prolonged or extensive use should be avoided due to potential for iodine absorption and effects on fetal/infant thyroid function. Consult a doctor.
