Description
Overview of the medicine
Brodil-Levo 50 mcg Inhaler contains Levosalbutamol, a short-acting beta-agonist used to relieve bronchospasm in conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It helps relax the muscles in the airways, making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual dosage for adults and adolescents 6 years of age and older is 1-2 puffs (50-100 mcg) every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 12 puffs in 24 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required, but caution should be exercised in elderly patients with co-morbidities, especially cardiovascular conditions.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is typically required in patients with renal impairment, but clinical monitoring is advisable.
How to Take
For oral inhalation only. Shake the inhaler well before each use. Inhale slowly and deeply through the mouth while pressing down on the canister. Hold breath for as long as comfortable, then exhale slowly. Follow specific instructions provided with the device.
Mechanism of Action
Levosalbutamol is a selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. It stimulates beta-2 receptors in the bronchial smooth muscles, leading to relaxation of these muscles and subsequent bronchodilation. This action helps to open up the airways and improve airflow to the lungs.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Bronchodilation typically occurs within 5-10 minutes after inhalation.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the urine, with a small amount excreted in feces.
Half life
The plasma elimination half-life is approximately 3.3-4 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral inhalation, with systemic absorption occurring through the lungs and gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Metabolized by sulfation in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levosalbutamol or any component of the inhaler.
- Patients with severe milk protein allergy, as some formulations may contain lactose.
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May potentiate the hypokalemic effect of beta-agonists. Monitor potassium levels.
Beta-blockers
May block the pulmonary effect of levosalbutamol and can produce severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients. Concomitant use should generally be avoided.
MAOIs/Tricyclic Antidepressants
May potentiate the cardiovascular effects of levosalbutamol. Use with extreme caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from direct sunlight, heat, and freezing. Keep out of reach of children. The canister is pressurized; do not puncture or incinerate.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation (e.g., tachycardia, palpitations, tremor, nervousness), headache, and hypokalemia. Treatment is generally supportive and symptomatic. Consider cardioselective beta-blockers in severe cases, but with extreme caution due to potential for bronchospasm.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if levosalbutamol is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.

Lab Monitoring
- Monitor serum potassium levels, especially in patients receiving concomitant diuretics, corticosteroids, or xanthines, as beta-agonists can cause transient hypokalemia.
Doctor Notes
- Educate patients on proper inhaler technique and the importance of using this as a rescue medication, not a maintenance therapy.
- Caution patients against exceeding the prescribed dose due to potential cardiovascular adverse effects and paradoxical bronchospasm.
- Assess for concomitant use of other bronchodilators or corticosteroids to ensure optimal asthma/COPD management.
- Monitor patients with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions or hypokalemia risk factors closely.
Patient Guidelines
- Follow your doctor's instructions regarding dose and frequency. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Learn and practice proper inhaler technique to ensure the medicine reaches your lungs effectively.
- If your symptoms worsen or the inhaler provides less relief than usual, seek medical attention immediately.
- This inhaler is for quick relief of symptoms; it is not a substitute for long-term control medications.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Brodil-Levo 50 mcg Inhaler may cause side effects like tremor or dizziness in some individuals. If you experience these effects, avoid driving or operating machinery until you feel well.
Lifestyle Advice
- Identify and avoid triggers that worsen your asthma or COPD symptoms (e.g., allergens, smoke, pollutants).
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise (as tolerated) and a balanced diet.
- Quit smoking if you are a smoker, as it significantly worsens respiratory conditions.
