Description
Overview of the medicine
Bromofen 0.09% Eye Drop contains Bromfenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), used to treat inflammation and pain following cataract surgery.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) twice daily, beginning 24 hours after surgery and continuing for 2 weeks.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch, and instill one drop. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface. Replace cap immediately after use.
Mechanism of Action
Bromfenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, primarily by blocking the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes. Prostaglandins are mediators of inflammation and pain in the eye.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Ocular anti-inflammatory effects typically begin within hours of initial application.
Excretion
Excretion of systemically absorbed bromfenac and its metabolites occurs primarily via urine.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 1.5 hours, but ocular retention is longer, leading to sustained effects.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical ocular administration. Peak ocular concentrations are achieved within 150-180 minutes.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes (mainly CYP2C9) to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to bromfenac or any components of the formulation.
- History of aspirin-induced asthma, urticaria, or other allergic-type reactions to NSAIDs.
Drug Interactions
Topical Corticosteroids
May increase the potential for corneal healing problems, especially in compromised corneas. If co-administered, monitor carefully.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical ocular administration. If accidentally ingested, drink fluids to dilute. If eye irritation occurs, flush the eye with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother due to unknown systemic absorption.
