Description
Overview of the medicine
Candirox 8% w/w Nail Lacquer contains Ciclopirox, an antifungal agent used for the treatment of fungal infections of the nails (onychomycosis), especially those caused by dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply to the affected nails once daily for up to 48 weeks. Treatment duration depends on the severity of the infection and the rate of nail growth.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical use, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Apply a thin layer of the lacquer over the entire surface of the affected nail and the surrounding skin once daily, preferably at bedtime. Once a week, remove the old lacquer with an alcohol swab before new application. If a coat is missed, apply it as soon as remembered.
Mechanism of Action
Ciclopirox inhibits the growth of fungal cells by chelating polyvalent cations (e.g., Fe3+, Al3+) resulting in the inhibition of metal-dependent enzymes, which are critical for fungal cell metabolism and integrity. It also disrupts fungal cell membrane function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement usually observed after 3-6 months; complete clearance may take up to 9-12 months.
Excretion
Excreted via kidneys, primarily as glucuronides.
Half life
Not well-characterized for topical nail application, but systemic half-life is approximately 1.7 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical application to nails. Less than 5% of the dose is absorbed systemically.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism at the application site. Absorbed Ciclopirox is primarily metabolized by glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciclopirox or any components of the formulation
- Children under 12 years of age (safety and efficacy not established)
Drug Interactions
N/A
Minimal systemic absorption, so significant drug interactions are unlikely with topical application.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep tightly closed. Keep away from heat and open flame.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus/infant. Consult a doctor before use.
