Overview of the medicine
Cetmax 10 mg tablet contains Cetirizine Hydrochloride, a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily or 5 mg twice daily.
Elderly
5 mg once daily, or as advised by a physician.
Renal_impairment
Moderate renal impairment (CrCl 31-50 ml/min): 5 mg once daily. Severe renal impairment (CrCl <31 ml/min): 5 mg every other day. End-stage renal disease (CrCl <10 ml/min): Not recommended.
How to Take
Cetmax tablets are for oral administration. They can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine selectively antagonizes peripheral H1-receptors, thereby inhibiting the effects of histamine which include vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and itching.

Onset
Onset of action within 20 to 60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the urine, with a small amount in feces.
Half life
Approximately 8 to 11 hours in adults.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives.
- Patients with severe renal impairment (end-stage renal disease with CrCl <10 ml/min).
Drug Interactions
Theophylline (low dose, e.g., 400 mg/day)
A small decrease in cetirizine clearance has been observed, but its clinical significance is minor.
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
May increase CNS depression and impair psychomotor performance. Concurrent use should be avoided or used with caution.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, agitation, tachycardia, tremor, urinary retention, and malaise. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of fetal harm, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Cetirizine is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
